I absolutely adore this advertisement from the Australian retail clothing chain Ojay. In the early 80's editions of Dolly, Ojay fashions featured quite heavily and their fashions were cute and du jour. It was quite sad to hear recently that they have been put in the hands of administrators (meaning they're closing) but it's kind of not that hard to see why. Unfortunately I didn't find their fashions to be all that exciting lately - I guess they were targeting an older demographic - I just wish they would have stayed as cool as this ad!
One of my closest friends from design school got a job designing there in the '80s!
ReplyDeleteWell Ojay designs in the 80's were fabulous, so your friend did well!
DeleteIt's weird, (considering it was about a million years ago) but I still remember when my friend told me about the interview over coffee at the RMIT student union. She said that the head designer interviewed her and liked her because she was a little shy and softspoken, (which she was) as she was tired of interviewing all these loud, overconfident students yelling at her about how great they were. I remember I wisecracked something silly like "Well, the squeakiest well doesn't always get oiled, it gets replaced!" (typical of me at that time).... But it's funny what you remember, eh?
ReplyDeleteI love that story, and love even more that someone unassuming and shy won out in the end! (Doesn't happen often enough in my opinion - have worked with far too many overconfident people who end up being absolute horrors in the long run).
DeleteYes it is very sad that this has happened to them, another historic retail chain soon to be gone :(
