Aztec - Dolly April 1986

April 1986
Model Stephanie Browne
Photography Bill Ling

Apologies for the not so good state the cover image is in, but I thought it was worth scanning in, given the fantastic spread this Aztec feature is.  Again, I do love a bold colour, and there is a lot of colour clashing going on and layering of knits (can't wait for Winter to truly kick in so I can throw on all my woolies).

  1. This spread is somewhat familiar, but the name Bill Ling did bring back memories. This makes me yearn for winter too! .. Being in Perth, I have a while to wait :/

    1. I'm sooo glad that here in Melbourne it already is getting wintery!!

    2. The model Stephanie was an acquaintance 's sister. I think the family knew the editor so she did a bit of modelling for Dolly and I think she wrote some articles as well. It seems a lot more casual in those days.

  2. Maryanne this is not really related to this spread - but one of the other things that ignite my memories of the time are scents. I just used a moisturiser that totally reminded me of the smell of Dolly's back then. Am I mixing up my memories of the time or are there ads with perfume samples in the issues you have? I know there was a lot of Impulse being aimed at that demographic.

    1. Hmmm there were a lot of Impulse inserts in them - some of my issues still have it and you can still smell it!

  3. I remember this model - she was doing work experience and "discovered". The story about this sounded truly thrilling to me as a 13 year old. Also they did another feature on her which must have been about different body types and I remember the exact words were that Stephanie's flat chest was "the bane of her life"!

  4. Love all your Dolly posts from the 80’s. UK photographer Bill Ling alerted me to your blog as I was the editor back then – thanks for all the memories, had a lovely morning going through all the old shoots. Deb Bibby X
